The Bülk MK1 velomobile is a muscle-powered vehicle for sports, leisure and mobility in general. Although it is technically a bicycle, it can do much more: it offers excellent weather protection, high riding comfort, high safety and requires considerably less power than a racing bike for the same speed.
After Eggert Bülk and Jens Buckbesch started the Milan project in 2005 (which is still running successfully today), they started a new velomobile project in 2021, the Bülk-MK1.
It implements a new space utilization and aerodynamic concept. The findings from various wind tunnel tests were also taken into account.

“The Bülk is my fourth velomobile and the first new velomobile I’ve owned. I wanted a lighter and more efficient velomobile than my Quest XS with a more adjustable seat and better internal airflow for cooling in hot weather. The first thing I noticed with my Bülk was how well it climbs. The Bülk does a great job of turning all the energy you put into pedaling into speed. It carries that speed really well, handles great in the wind, is easy to adjust to find that perfect seat position, and the maintenance hatches make working on it so much easier. The air intake in the nose does great at keeping me cool in the summer and I like how easy it is to seal it off in the winter to help me stay warm. I bought my Bülk velomobile in September ’23 at Cycle-Con in Ohio. I looked at the Bülk for a while before committing to buying one, I was and still am very impressed with many aspects of the design and general build quality. Overall, I really like the bike and put almost 600 miles on it in the last 24 days. It’s beautiful, comfortable, safe and fast. The Bülk is really fun to ride, pretty smooth on the generally decent roads down here and has enough ground clearance with the standard suspension that I’ve never scraped on speed bumps. Compared to the Quest (my other velomobile), the Bülk feels like a tighter fit (which it is) in the nose area but that was minimized by cleat placement and adjustment of seat and bottom bracket position. It feels more solid in corners (not as much body roll) and doesn’t seem to wobble down the road as the Quest would do sometimes. The internal ventilation on the Bülk is a lot better, especially around legs and lower torso. The number one thing I bought the Bülk for is to go faster and it works. I don’t have a power meter to quote speed for power but it is fast and allows me to cruise around 23 without trying too hard. and if coming off an overpass buzz up to and maintain 27 for a pretty good distance. The highest sustained speed I’ve seen for a number of miles is 29 when passing then dropping a group on A1A being led by a guy in position on a tri bike. Great bike, pretty safe with basic design and a good (and upgradeable) lighting package and lots of fun to ride while (literally) stopping traffic. (Roger V.)
