Day 2 | 204 KM | 486 HM
Today we slept longer until 06:09 h. Which was still early. Had a leisurely breakfast, packed up and then set off at 07:30 h in light rain. The rain soon became heavier, as announced in the weather forecast. So we put on the foam cover and drove on. At 9:30 am we reached Benno. He had invited us the day before for coffee and cake. You can also have coffee and cake at 9:30 in the morning. The intended half hour soon turned into a whole hour. Then we finally set off again, as expected in the real rain. And on through the North German countryside towards Stade. We stopped by Sven Kröll, one of the best velomobile dealers. But there was no one at home. In Kutenholz we looked for a café and had coffee and cake again. That was our lunch. Now we only had to get to Wischhafen to catch the Elbe ferry to Glückstadt. We hadn't really looked at how far it was and were surprised to find that it was quite a long way. The traffic around Stade was very heavy and annoying, which was probably mostly due to Friday afternoon. Many drivers, on the other hand, found the two velomobiles in front of them very annoying, because they kept getting stuck in traffic jams.
Around three we reached Wischhafen. The rain had stopped and it was clearing up. The ferry left right under our noses. After a quarter of an hour, the next one came and took us to the other side. Together with a hobby rocker group, the Highway Lions, who came from Bochum on their motorbikes.
On the other side of the Elbe, the weather became very nice. Sunny and a bit windy. The first kilometres through flat marshland. The last 30 km became more undulating and we rode onto the Geest. This was the end of the glaciers from the Ice Age. On the way we passed through Wacken, the heavy metal epicentre of Germany. Today we were guests of a velomobile-riding couple from wheelbase.
