Day 5 | Viborg - Hirtshals | 156 km | 751 HM
Today it was supposed to rain in the morning, so in order to pack everything dry, the alarm clock was set for 06:00 hrs. At 08:00 we hit the road and the weather was fine. At kilometre 50 we stopped for breakfast at a church. It was so warm that the cheese was oozing some fat. Slowly, storm clouds were brewing.
Today it continued to go up and down in small waves. Finally, near Aalborg, the storm front was quite black and right next to us. Brigitte suggested we quickly go to the Burger King on the other side and wait out the storm. As soon as we were inside, it started to pour. So we spent 1 hour with coffee and cookies.
But somehow we had to get on. So, despite a little rain, we managed to drive on. You just have to overcome your inner inhibitions. With a velomobile it is actually no problem. Get in, put on your helmet, pull on the neoprene cover and ride. This way, hardly any drops come inside and you can ride undisturbed in the dry. The only problems are fogged glasses or the helmet visor. Drying them off from time to time helps. So we rolled on northwards through Aalborg in the rain.
The traffic was less now. From time to time we tried out the cycle path. Most of the time it was too narrow, so we ended up with our bikes on the grass verge and back on the road again. And partly there was grit on it from cars that had come onto the verge.
The rain became weaker and we could drive open again.
In Hirtshals we went shopping. No sooner were we under a roof at the supermarket than the heaviest shower today came. In front of the drains in the car park, large whirlpools formed from the water running off. After the shower was over, we rolled to the nearby campsite, which was packed with motorhomes and campers. Cyclists with tents are a dying breed among holidaymakers.
Tonight there was a strong wind with gusts. Our tent was shaken pretty badly.
