John Burrell

Hi! My name is John Burrell and I am a velomobile ambassador from Illinois, USA. Let me know how I can help you discover a fantastic alternative to a car that’s much faster and more comfortable than a bicycle! Let’s schedule a chat and maybe even a test drive!

About me

I am 76 years old (2022). I started the competitive life as a runner, then migrated to triathlon, where I was an all American and qualified for the National Championships twice. After breaking my neck in a Time Trial in 2008, I focused on recumbents. Since I still wanted to ride fast and race, I looked for the fastest recumbents. Eventually I settled on a Cruzbike Vendetta for fast road rides and a Thundervolt M1 lowracer exclusively for racing. I also own an ICE VTX Trike (because I wanted the fastest recumbent trike!).

But I realized I could go faster and more safely in a Velomobile. I planned to buy a velomobile from Velomobile World this year and was excited to know I could get the new Bülk MK1.

I race my recumbents frequently. This year (2022) I did 7 races including a world record and winning the IL State Championship. My last race was a World Record (set on my M1).

Designed for efficiency

The Bülk Distance is here!

Experience uncompromising aerodynamics meets everyday practicality. The fastest Bülk ever created features next-level CFD-optimized design, revolutionary “drag and grab” access technology, and the proven Bülk performance you trust.

Bülk MK1 Velomobile

After Eggert Bülk and Jens Buckbesch started the Milan project in 2005 (which is still running successfully today), they started a new velomobile project in 2021, the Bülk-MK1. It implements a new space utilization and aerodynamic concept. The findings from various wind tunnel tests were also taken into account. Jens documented every step of the Bülk-MK1 project, then he sent us very detailed info to create a page where you can discover the philosophy of the Bülk-MK1.

What is a velomobile

A velomobile is a human-powered vehicle related to the bicycle, for everyday use, with a body/shell that provides comfort, weather protection and luggage space. Due to the aerodynamically shaped bodywork, you can achieve a decent speed with little effort (30-50 km/h on flat road). Velomobiles are very suitable as commuter vehicles, for shopping or holidays, also are a good way to clear your mind while taking a tour or a road trip with your friends.
