How we measure the spoke tension
Changing a spoke
The front wheels of your DF/DFXL velomobile are critical components that impact handling, stability, and safety. Our maintenance videos demonstrate essential procedures, including spoke replacement and wheel truing.
Regular spoke maintenance ensures optimal wheel performance and longevity. The recommended spoke tension should be between 1000 and 1200 Newton (approximately 122 kg), measured using a proper spoke tension meter for consistency and accuracy.
When replacing a broken spoke, begin by removing the rim tape to access the spoke nipples. Once you’ve removed the broken spoke, insert the new spoke through the hub and thread the nipple onto it. Apply thread locker (such as Permabond A113) to prevent loosening. Next, tension the spoke to match the surrounding spokes. Check the wheel true by spinning it to ensure proper alignment. Install new rim tape, applying two layers for protection against spoke nipple wear. Finally, carefully reinstall the tube and tire, paying special attention to proper valve stem alignment to prevent tube damage.
After spoke replacement or during routine maintenance, check the wheel for true by mounting it in a truing stand or using the velomobile’s suspension as a reference point. Minor wobbles may not affect performance significantly, but severe misalignment should be corrected to prevent rim damage.
