How to remove the rear wheel

The rear wheel system in your DF/DFXL velomobile combines the drive train, gear system, and structural support. Proper maintenance of this system is essential for optimal performance and longevity.
To remove the rear wheel for maintenance, start by positioning the chain on the smallest gear to minimize tension. Remove the chain from the front chainwheel to completely eliminate tension. Using a 19mm wrench and the specialized tool (available through our website and provided to ambassadors), loosen the rear axle nut by turning clockwise – note this is opposite to the usual direction. The nut has Loctite applied to prevent loosening during operation, so initial movement may require extra force.
Once the rear axle is removed, you’ll need to remove the bushings – the larger one from the drive side and the smaller one from the opposite side. For wide-range cassettes (like 11-52), additional steps are required: remove the rear suspension by taking off the nut and washer, then remove the rear derailleur to allow sufficient clearance for wheel removal.
Regular spoke tension checks are essential for wheel integrity. The recommended tension range is between 1000 and 1200 Newton (approximately 122 kg), which can be verified using a spoke tension meter. Monthly calibration checks of your measurement tools ensure consistent maintenance.
