The wishbone system in your DF/DFXL velomobile consists of three main components working together to provide steering and wheel stability. The longitudinal arm prevents forward and backward wheel movement during braking, the transverse arm maintains lateral wheel position, and the steering arm connects to the steering system to control wheel direction.

Key maintenance points for the longitudinal arm include checking the washer tightness – they should be firm but still allow finger rotation. Over-tightening can create excess tension leading to potential arm failure during turns. The transverse arm should be checked for straightness, particularly when inspecting used vehicles or after impact incidents. It’s constructed from standard M6 stainless steel rod, making replacements readily available.

The rod ends require periodic maintenance, ideally annually. These zinc-plated components should be removed, regreased with vaseline, and reinstalled to prevent corrosion. The steering mechanism’s alignment can be checked by measuring from tire center to tire center, both front and rear of the wheels.
