Hey, I’m Rob English.
I’ve been building custom bikes for close to 20 years now.
Cycling’s always been part of my life – commuting, sport, all of it.
I got into velomobiles around 15 years ago. I’d built a recumbent back in high school, but the idea of something fully enclosed, efficient, and
weatherproof really stuck with me.
The moment that really pushed me to get one? I hit black ice on a winter commute. Went down, and my bike got crushed by a truck. I wasn’t hurt,
but that was the wake-up call.
I’m committed to commuting under human power – so I needed a better solution for winter.
I found a used velomobile in Canada, took the train up, and rode it 500 kilometers home. First time I’d ever sat in one.
Now, my shop’s 45 kilometers from home.
With the Bülk, I was able to hit similar commute times to my old motor-assisted velomobile – but without a motor.
That’s how efficient it is.
The aerodynamics are just incredible – I can maintain speeds that would be exhausting on a regular bike.
I can cruise at 55-60 kph on flat sections, and the carbon shell cuts through headwinds that would normally slow you down.
It’s fast, comfortable, and incredibly well-designed.
And for me, “it’s the perfect human scale.”
You’re in the landscape, not just passing through it in a metal box.
One evening, I was doing about 60 kph downhill – there’s a long fast section on my route.
Then out of nowhere – a deer jumped right into the road.
Next thing I know, I’m upside down in a bush.
The Bülk was totaled – but I came out of it with just a concussion.
That crash really proved the value of the safety features – it did its job.
The way the shell is designed with structured crash zones, headrest protection, and overall body integrity – it all matters.
If I’d been on a regular bike, I probably would’ve broken bones, or worse.
I use it like a car – I can do my grocery runs, stay dry in the rain, and just cruise.
People always stop and stare.
Some days I enjoy the attention, some days I just want to get home.
But what’s wild is how safe I feel out on the road.
“I’ve never felt threatened by vehicles in the velomobile.”
Drivers don’t know what it is, so they slow down, give me space – even follow me for miles just out of curiosity.
Once, a sheriff pulled me over just to ask what I was riding!
Cycling’s just built into my life. I don’t think about it as exercise – it just happens.
And for me, riding is where the ideas flow.
“I do my best design work when I’m riding.”
There’s something about that steady movement… it gives your brain room to work things out.
It’s always seemed strange to me that people drive to a gym to ride a stationary bike – when you could just ride to your destination and get both
things done at once.
So yeah – I’m definitely replacing my Bülk with another one.
Only tweak is switching from tiller to tank steering – I prefer the feel, especially with all the high-speed cornering I do.
Otherwise, it’s perfect.
It fits how I live, how I move, and how I think.
I’m looking forward to getting back out there and continuing to show what’s possible with human-powered transportation.
There’s something special about being part of a community that’s pushing the boundaries of what we can do with thoughtful engineering and
design.
