53. Part 1 | Visiting Helsinki (1st day in Helsinki)

A few impressions from Helsinki. After the long journey, I was curious about the city. I hadn't read anything beforehand. But then afterwards, because I found the architecture very fascinating.

.....................................................

Helsinki has the largest collection of classical and neoclassical buildings in Northern Europe. And above all, often connected streets and squares like at the cathedral. And at the same time very modern buildings. Right away the railway station by Eliel Saarinens from 1914 in late Art Nouveau style.

...........................

⬇️ What a station restaurant.

...........................

By the way, Finland has only been independent from Russia since 1917. In 1906, the first European country with suffrage for women. Also the first country with passive suffrage for women. Saana Marin was the youngest woman head of government in the world. Now voted out.

Then we wanted to see the famous graffiti wall. Walk to the sea.

...........................

⬆️ Past the World Trade Center (Helsinki)

⬆️ Kioski

⬆️ Fire brigade

⬆️ This would be something for the garden

⬆️ Interesting public toilets. Toilet seat is lowered and cleaned on request. I'll save a photo. But of this to dispose of drug syringe.

...........................

⬆️ In the embassy district

⬆️ By the sea or beach.

⬆️ Hot shoes

⬆️ Upscale residential area

⬆️ Graffiti Wall not worth it.

⬆️ The church of Mikael Agricola

⬆️ As a contribution to the helmet discussion. Perhaps expand the definition of helmet.

⬆️ Is the outer skin made of steel plates probably welded?

⬆️ The bricklayer still has work to do for now.

⬆️ Very cool the Radhighway better Radlowway through the city.

Unimpressive from the outside because it was built into the depths, the rock church (Tempeliaukio) planned by Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen and completed in 1969 (expressionism). Very effective inside. I missed the wide angle.

...........................

⬆️ This enterprise-like ceiling is made of copper strips, I think.

⬆️ Somewhat older, the cathedral is also Helsinki's landmark.

⬆️ Reminded me of the stairs of the Acropolis in Athens from the front.

⬆️ A different kind of delivery service

⬆️ The tourist office is hidden there.

⬆️ Sitting in a café by the harbour

⬆️ Resting. Yes, the tablecloths and the apron are by Marimekko Onni, a famous Finnish designer.

⬆️ Stroll around the market.

⬆️ The market halls

⬆️ The Ferris wheel. Two cabins have a sauna.

⬆️ Nearby is the swimming pool. A Baltic pool, not for hot showers, one chlorinated and one heated.

⬆️ The Orthodox Church

That was today's visit. I was surprised by the architecture.

Ate some more fish and then back to the campsite.
