Day 45 | Rovaniemi - Taipa | 171 KM | 397 HM
In the morning at breakfast. It is raining as forecast.
"Please Check the forecast again for today. (Rovaniemi)"
"It's supposed to rain there all day."
"And for Oulu on the coast?"
"Oh sun all day. 35 then 38 degrees. Feels like 40. .."
"I didn't expect it to be this warm."
"Sunset 18:45 h."
😲😲😲😲😲🤔
"It can't be all that. Look at the map. Please"
"The Olu is in Africa, near Kinshasa."
As announced, it was still raining at the start and until a good bit behind Rovaniemi. The road was partly designed like a motorway. But there was no sign prohibiting cycling. So ride. In this context we saw the first police car in Finland today.
The mushrooms are growing magnificently in the forests. It must have rained a lot lately.
A few spotters again today. Even dogs are interested in us.
The Finnish drivers? I would say so-so. Many are very considerate, but quite a few shoot past you. I feel like I'm in Germany.
All day long you drive along the main road. You don't have a chance to avoid it, though, because then you're on a gravel or sand road.
There are really long trucks here.
It's getting lighter back there. There's bound to be sun today.
Yesterday I only saw two bikepacker bikes under a shed roof. At the campsite, a cyclist was packing his things very indecisively. On the way I met another older woman on her bike. There are far more women on touring bikes than in the past.
Before Kemi on the Baltic Sea, there were only fair-weather clouds or none at all.
In Kemi, Biggi rode into the right-turn lane.
Me, "why are you going that way?"
Biggi, "don't you see that one in front?"
Me, "what?"
There's actually a Quattrovelo on the other side. You can't see them at all.
Thomas from Skelleftea/Sweden on a tour around the Baltic Sea. We talk a little at the crossroads.
We also learn something about the Finnish and Swedish velonauts that Thomas knows. We exchange contact details and then we have to move on. We booked the ferry from Helsinki to Travemünde a few days ago, so we want to make some kilometres.
The big road is partly motorway and we drive on the old road or partly on the very narrow shoulder. On the right gravel, on the left strips as a scratch.
The houses are getting prettier and better kept now.
Finally we arrive. American for once today. Burgers, potatoes, mayo sauce, coleslaw. We were so hungry. Today we ran almost exclusively at low range. HR 86, ø 62 watts. So the whole day we just burned fat.
