Day 49 | Vaasa - Nummijärvi | 137 KM | 470 HM
A few impressions of Vaasa.
Drove past the Institute for Experiments with Energy or something like that at the university in Vaas. Next to it a "real energy plant". The cool turned tower is also part of it.
Around the corner, something was just demolished. Behind it, an art museum in an old building.
And a few kilometres further on. Interesting how similar things can be close to each other.
Many have the swimming pool ladders on their houses. As fire escapes next to the windows or on the roof as access to the chimney.
Today we drove the absolute side route. What peace and quiet. On some sections there was a car every 10 minutes.
A few days ago we got the idea to replace the missing butter on the bread with cucumber mayonnaise. Origin was a leftover of it to the salad. It's quite tasty, as the bread here is often very dry. The picture was taken during lunch in Jarvu. A nest abandoned by God. We were sitting on a bench in front of the supermarket. On the car park in front of it 2-4 cars. While we sat there and ate, the car park filled up more and more. We wondered if they all came for us and if the place would soon have to be closed because of overcrowding. There were a good 20 cars by now.
It is noticeable that in Finland many people just look and don't talk to us. If they do and we ask if they know English, it's usually over. Then it might go on with signs and we can make it clear that you have to pedal in the velomobiles like on a bicycle. But behind the village there was a biathlon stadium and a little later a motor sports track, the Botniaring with 4 km. Maybe for the next record attempt? What I'm trying to say is that the place isn't that dead.
At the same time, dilapidated bus shelters speak volumes. The same goes for the condition of the houses. It is striking how many houses are in ruins. Maybe 1-2 out of 10. Some of them used to be really beautiful. When you think about what people put into them in terms of ideas, work and hopes, and then what can become of them. Transience becomes so tangible.
It's amazing how much we have climbed unnoticed today.
11 € is the price of the site a little off the main routes. Fantastic lawn and we have almost everything just for us.
