How to remove the rear wheel

Rear Wheel Removal and Installation

The rear wheel maintenance is crucial for optimal performance of your velomobile. To remove and install the rear wheel, you will need a standard 19mm wrench, a special alignment tool available in our webshop, and optionally a small rubber mallet. Loctite 243 or similar thread locker is recommended for reassembly.

Before beginning the removal process, ensure the chain is positioned on the smallest sprocket to minimize tension. The chain should also be removed from the front chainring to eliminate any tension on the cassette during the removal process.

To remove the wheel, first position the bike securely and locate the rear axle. Use the 19mm wrench to loosen the axle, turning right to loosen. The wheel assembly can then be carefully removed while supporting the wheel.

For installation, thoroughly clean all components before reassembly. The bushings must be properly oriented, with the larger bushing positioned outside and the smaller one inside. Apply a thin layer of grease to the axle and ensure proper alignment of the center bush between bearings. During final assembly, use Loctite 243 on threads and tighten securely with the 19mm wrench.

Annual Maintenance

Your rear wheel system should undergo maintenance at least once yearly. This includes removing and inspecting the axle for rust, cleaning and regreasing all components, checking freehub operation, inspecting bearings and bushings, and verifying proper chain alignment. Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your velomobile’s rear wheel system.
