Understanding Wishbone Components

The wishbone system consists of three main components: the longitudinal arm, the transverse arm, and the steering arm. Each component serves a specific purpose in maintaining proper wheel alignment and control.

Longitudinal Arm Maintenance

The longitudinal arm secures the wheel position and prevents forward and backward movement during braking. When maintaining the longitudinal arm, ensure the washers are properly tightened – they should be firm but still allow manual rotation. Over-tightening can create excessive tension and potentially lead to component failure during turns.

Transverse Arm Inspection

The transverse arm maintains the wheel’s lateral position. Regular inspection is crucial, particularly when purchasing a used velomobile or after encountering potholes. The arm should be straight and properly aligned. If bent, replacement is necessary. Standard M6 stainless steel rods are readily available at local suppliers for replacement.

Rod End Maintenance

The rod ends require periodic maintenance due to their zinc-plated steel construction. At least once yearly, remove the rod ends, apply fresh vaseline, and reinstall them. When reinstalling, apply vaseline inside the housing to prevent corrosion. The rod ends should have approximately 15-20 degrees of movement, and both ends must be properly aligned for correct operation.

Alignment Verification

After any maintenance work involving rod ends or other components, wheel alignment must be verified. Measure from the center of one tire to the center of the opposite tire, both at the front and rear of the wheels. Precise measurements ensure proper tracking and handling.
