Brake Maintenance
Brake Maintenance Guide
Regular brake maintenance ensures optimal performance and safety. The maintenance process focuses on several key areas of the brake assembly.
Brake Component Maintenance
The brake mechanism can develop resistance due to moisture and rust, particularly during winter months. Key maintenance points include:
The brake pivot points require periodic cleaning and lubrication. When maintenance is needed, remove the brake assembly using an 11mm wrench while holding the brake lever. Inspect push-on washers during maintenance and always replace them rather than reuse them due to potential damage during removal.
For brake shoe maintenance, remove the complete brake shoe assembly. Clean any rust from metal surfaces using fine P400 sandpaper. Apply vaseline to moving parts, being careful to avoid contaminating the brake shoe surfaces. When reinstalling components, use Loctite 243 on threaded fasteners.
Brake Shoe Care
Brake shoes typically require minimal replacement unless used in mountainous terrain. Options include replacing individual brake shoes or the complete brake plate assembly. When servicing brake shoes, maintain cleanliness and avoid contamination with lubricants. The specialized brake shoe grinding tool, available in the extra tool kit, can be used to maintain flat, effective braking surfaces.
Brake Adjustment Procedure
Proper brake adjustment ensures equal braking force and straight-line stopping. The adjustment process includes:
Set the parking brake as a starting reference point. Test each wheel by lifting and rotating it to compare brake resistance. If uneven braking is detected, adjust the mechanism that brings the brake shoes closer together on the side with less braking force.
After adjustment, verify free wheel rotation with brakes released. The wheel should spin freely and move slightly backward when stopping, indicating proper bearing function and brake clearance. New bearings may require a break-in period for smoother operation.
Safety Considerations
Equal brake adjustment is crucial for safe operation, particularly during cornering. If only one wheel provides braking force and that wheel lifts during a turn, no braking will be available. Regular brake inspection and adjustment helps prevent this safety hazard.
