Front Wheel Maintenance Guide
Regular wheel maintenance ensures optimal performance and safety. The maintenance process focuses on several key areas of the wheel assembly.
Wheel Inspection and Tensioning
A properly maintained wheel should have equal spoke tension throughout. When inspecting the wheel, listen for consistent tension sounds across all spokes. Uneven sounds may indicate a loose spoke requiring adjustment. The overall tension equality between spokes is more critical than achieving perfect wheel trueness, as uneven tension can lead to spoke breakage.
Spoke Replacement Procedure
When replacing a broken spoke, remove the tire and rim tape first. Note that rim tape is typically installed in double layers and may need replacement during maintenance. When installing a new spoke, apply diluted Loctite 243 to the threads. Mark the replaced spoke with tape during tensioning to track its location. Aim to match the tension of surrounding spokes for optimal wheel balance.
Tire and Rim Tape Installation
For rim tape installation, cut the tape at 45-degree angles and start application four centimeters from the valve hole. Apply two complete layers with firm pressure to prevent wrinkles. When creating the valve hole, use a sharp tool rather than forcing the valve stem through to prevent damage. During tire installation, carefully check that the inner tube isn’t pinched between the tire and rim.
Speed Sensor Setup
When reinstalling the wheel, ensure proper alignment of the speed sensor magnet. The sensor should be positioned 5-6 millimeters from the magnet, with the sensor’s marking line aligned with the magnet’s center. This spacing ensures reliable speed readings without contact.
