Rear Wheel Maintenance Guide
Regular maintenance of the rear wheel ensures optimal performance and longevity. The maintenance process includes wheel removal, bearing inspection, and proper reassembly techniques.
Wheel Removal Process
The rear wheel removal process requires specific steps for safe disassembly. First, position the chain on the smallest rear gear to minimize tension. Remove the chain from the front chainwheel to eliminate tension completely. Using the specialized tool (available on the website and provided to ambassadors) with a 19mm wrench, turn the rear axle bolt clockwise for removal. This unconventional direction is intentional, and the bolt includes Loctite for security.
Bearing Maintenance
Bearing replacement should be considered carefully as it is rarely necessary under normal conditions. Bearings typically last 50,000 kilometers or approximately five years under normal use. However, extreme conditions such as constant exposure to moisture or improper storage can accelerate wear through rust formation. Regular maintenance includes cleaning and applying Teflon spray to extend bearing life.
Bearing Replacement Procedure
When bearing replacement is necessary, ensure proper alignment during installation. Clean all surfaces thoroughly, particularly the aluminum housing. For worn housings, apply minimal green Loctite 638 to the outer surface, being careful to prevent contamination of the bearing itself. Installation should be performed gradually and evenly, checking for proper alignment throughout the process.
Special Considerations
For bikes equipped with larger cassettes (11-52), additional steps are required for wheel removal. This includes removing the rear suspension and derailleur to create adequate clearance. Pay attention to the proper orientation of bushings during reassembly, noting the size difference between sides.
