WHY ARE THERE SO FEW VELOMOBILES SEEN ON THE STREETS?

In the last 20 years there has been a slow but steadily growing increase in interest, but in fact there are still very few velomobiles around the world. In view of the possibilities of this product and its environmental relevance, we expect a steep increase in demand over the next few years.

When you enter the public space with a velomobile, you are very much in the focus of attention. Some may not have the courage to do so.

ISN’T THAT DANGEROUS WITH SUCH A FLAT VEHICLE IN TRAFFIC? IS ONE SEEN WITH IT?

This question is mostly asked by people who have not yet had any experience with a velomobile. We rate the driving safety in a Milan as significantly higher than on a conventional bicycle.
– With its almost 5 square meter colored surface, the Milan is very clearly visible in traffic. In particular with the optional safety module that is attached to the highest point of the vehicle, the Milan stands out with its special safety lighting.
– Due to the very good aerodynamics, even less trained drivers find it easy to swim in traffic. The speed difference to the cars is much smaller than to a bicycle and this gives the driver more time to react.
– As a three-lane vehicle, you don’t have to keep your balance in Milan. This means that you always have a very good, wobble-free overview of the traffic behind you via the rear-view mirror.
– It turned out (and this applies to all fast velomobiles) that using cycle paths with the velomobile is much more dangerous than driving on the road. Not only because the trucks turning right pose a danger, but also because cross-traffic does not expect such fast vehicles on the cycle paths.
– The acceptance of velomobiles on the road by motorists is much higher than the acceptance of cyclists. Velomobiles are usually not classified as bicycles. Unfriendly situations occur much less often.
– The Milan has a number of passive safety features that protect the driver very well.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO TAKE ENOUGH LUGGAGE WITH SUCH A VEHICLE?

You can answer this question clearly with yes! Overall, there is a very large amount of storage space, but the difference to a normal bicycle with pannier bags is that you have to divide the luggage into more smaller pieces of luggage. The rear is suitable for larger parts; shopping bags, laptop or other parts fit in here (e.g. a complete golf club set fits into the Milan because it has a relatively long rear). Medium-sized bags fit on the side of the driver and under or behind the seat. At the front in the bow, i.e. in front of the front wheel arches, there is an optional luggage compartment on the left and right with a volume of around 8 liters each. You can easily reach these overhead lockers through the oversized access hatch of the Milan.
Whether weekly shopping, daily luggage or complete camping equipment: Many Milan drivers appreciate vacation tours where you have everything with you: tent, sleeping mat, micro cooker, sleeping bag, tools and spare parts, laundry, solar station and food for several days.
It has proven to be useful to use lightweight compression bags that you can pack into according to the topic and use the different colors to find everything quickly. These bags can be adjusted very well, weigh very little and you can grab them very easily by their handle.
By packing heavy items of luggage deeply and as far forward as possible (optional luggage compartments in the bow), you can even increase driving stability. And the aerodynamics do not suffer either, which is a major advantage over conventional touring bikes with luggage bags.
Travel Bremen – Großglockner:

Can I use it for daily commuting?

The M9 is excellent for daily commuting, offering weather protection, storage space for work items, and easy maneuverability in urban environments. Its width allows it to fit through standard doors, making it practical for daily use.

Can I ride it in bad weather?

Yes! The fully-enclosed body provides excellent protection from rain, wind and cold. Windshield wipers and an integrated defroster vent are available as options.

Can I use a velomobile on the road?

In most places, yes! Velomobiles are typically classified as bicycles or human-powered vehicles, meaning you generally don’t need a driver’s license to operate one. However, local laws can vary, so it’s important to check the specific regulations in your area.

In many regions, velomobiles follow the same rules as bicycles, allowing access to bike lanes, paths, and public roads. Some areas may have restrictions or special requirements, so always verify local guidelines.

When riding on public roads, you must follow standard traffic laws to ensure safety for yourself and others. If you’re unsure about the regulations in your area, consider consulting local authorities or cycling advocacy groups for the most up-to-date information.
